JUPITER, Fla., Aug. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Power Systems
Mfg., LLC (PSM), the Calpine Corporation (NYSE:CPN) manufacturing
and parts subsidiary, was selected to install PSM's low emissions
combustion technology, trade named LEC-III(R), at a major merchant
power generator's 600-megawatt cogeneration power plant in the
Houston, Texas area. PSM will convert five GE Frame 7E gas turbines
with its proprietary system to eliminate approximately 90-percent
of the power plant's nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. This project
will be PSM's eighth installation of its LEC-III(R) system in four
countries, comprising sixteen units with several additional units
in backlog. PSM specializes in advanced combustion technology and
hot gas path parts for industrial gas turbines, including products
for F-class machines. LEC-III(R) is designed to reduce NOx
emissions to less than five parts per million without the use of
selective catalytic reduction, providing significant capital and
operating cost savings as well as additional environmental
benefits. PSM President Tom Churbuck said, "PSM's LEC-III(R)
technology will enable this power plant to meet the increasingly
stringent air pollution requirements in the Houston area in a
cost-effective and environmentally preferred manner." PSM's scope
of supply includes the design and fabrication of the combustion
systems, plus system installation and commissioning. PSM will also
upgrade other gas turbine sub-systems, including digital controls
and features to improve operational flexibility and increase power
output via steam injection. For instance, with the PSM upgrade, the
power plant can be operated at low load levels down to about 50%,
while maintaining ultra-low nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide
emissions. PSM is scheduled to install the first of five units in
the spring of 2006, with the final unit in place by the spring of
2007. About Power Systems Mfg., LLC Power Systems Mfg., LLC, a
wholly owned subsidiary of Calpine Corporation (NYSE:CPN), is an
industry leader in gas turbine component engineering design and
production. PSM manufactures new vanes, blades, combustors and
other replacement parts for the industrial gas turbine industry.
The Jupiter, Fla.-based company also offers a wide range of low
emissions combustion systems and advanced airfoils designed to be
