BMC Software(R) First to Introduce Policy-Based Database Backup and
Recovery; Enables Customers to Meet Performance Goals by Managing
Against Set Policies HOUSTON, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BMC
Software, Inc. (NYSE:BMC) today announced SmartDBA(R) Recovery
Management, the industry's first policy- based database backup and
recovery solution. SmartDBA Recovery Management enables customers
to effectively manage their infrastructure in order to better align
their business and IT resources by providing business-relevant
policy compliance reporting tailored to the needs of the end user.
As a result, IT and business professionals are able to quickly and
effortlessly ensure the availability and recoverability of the
systems that are most critical to their business. "Providing
business relevance to technology issues is essential in today's
competitive environment and the driving force of our Business
Service Management strategy," said Mary Smars, vice president and
general manager, Distributed Systems Management, BMC Software.
"With the addition of policy management we are redefining how to
approach enterprise recovery by providing customers with a unique
perspective of their database environment. We are making it
possible for them to measure and track the recoverability of their
key systems throughout their business as well as understand the
impact these systems have on their SLAs." With the introduction of
SmartDBA Recovery Management, BMC Software is significantly
extending the functionality of its backup and recovery solution,
SQL-BackTrack, to include policy-based and centralized management.
Through centralized management, BMC Software is providing customers
with a consistent method to plan, monitor and manage database
backup and recovery across the enterprise from a centralized
console. Using SmartDBA Recovery Management, DBAs working in a
complex environment are able to easily establish "best practices"
for backup and recovery while managing and implementing these
policies consistently across a heterogeneous environment. "The
ability to assure the health of our business applications by
quickly knowing the status of our database backups is extremely
valuable from both a time and cost standpoint," said Bill Olver,
senior database administrator, Hoag Memorial Healthcare. "Currently
I spend about three hours every day reviewing logs to make sure our
databases are working as they should and all of our SLAs are being
met. Calculate the hourly rate over a month or a year, and SmartDBA
Recovery Management could provide us with huge cost savings."
Exploding data volumes, limited staff and increasing regulatory
requirements are just some of the issues today's IT staff are
facing. Coupled with tightening SLAs, the mandate for extremely
rapid and predictable database recoveries is very real. SmartDBA
Recovery Management addresses these difficult challenges with its
unique features, which include: -- Centralized Management -- the
ability to monitor the backup and recovery health of multiple
databases from a single screen; -- Policy Management -- a mechanism
for setting limits to provide alerts when SLAs are at risk or not
being met; -- Tailored Views -- provides IT executives with the
ability to monitor at the enterprise level, while DBAs can monitor
at the system or database level; and -- Proactive Resource
Management -- the collection of enterprise level data, which allows
users to follow backup and recovery trends. Pricing and
