Leading Insurance and Financial Products Organization Using BMC
Software Solutions to Manage Growing Infrastructure and Align IT
With Business Processes HOUSTON, Feb. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
BMC Software, Inc. (NYSE:BMC), a leading provider of enterprise
management solutions, today announced that Mutual of Omaha is using
BMC Software solutions to proactively manage its IT resources and
closely align IT with business services. Mutual of Omaha is a
full-service, multi-line organization providing insurance and
financial services products for individuals, businesses and groups
throughout the United States. Guaranteeing system availability for
Mutual of Omaha's 6,000-plus internal and external technology users
is the top priority of the company's IT department. To help achieve
this goal, Mutual of Omaha is leveraging BMC Software's
comprehensive portfolio of infrastructure management and identity
management solutions. These solutions have helped Mutual of Omaha
realize significant cost savings and have reduced database downtime
by 66 percent, backup times by 50 percent and customer-impact
problem tickets by 70 percent. Laying the Foundation to Align IT
with Business To seamlessly align IT activities with business
services, Mutual of Omaha first focused on implementing a
world-class infrastructure management system. "Our previous
approach was costing the company significantly in wasted
productivity and system downtime," said Bill Puskas, first vice
president in Mutual of Omaha's I/S Technical Services area. "To
remedy the situation, we set out to streamline our IT practices and
shift from reactive to proactive. We devised a plan focused on
proactively managing the organization's complete heterogeneous
environment from a central location to increase system availability
by more effective use of data. We selected BMC Software as our
partner because their products have a comprehensive architecture
for meeting our challenges and the extensibility to branch into
other technologies, including middleware and application processes,
allowing us to completely monitor our environment." Mutual of Omaha
first deployed the BMC(R) Performance Manager and BMC(R)
SQL-BackTrack(R) solutions, which their I/S team utilizes on a
daily basis, whether using BMC Performance Manager to troubleshoot
a current problem or generate an event for a breached threshold, or
using BMC SQL-BackTrack for backing up RDBMS data. The new
infrastructure management solution is managed from the BMC
Performance Manager Console, which gives systems programmers a
complete view of the IT infrastructure and their respective
environments. Today, many times when customers call IT with a
problem, the programmers are already aware of the issue and working
on a resolution. Mutual of Omaha has realized significant cost
savings by leveraging BMC SQL-BackTrack and BMC Performance Manager
products to become more proactive, and consistently provide the
level of availability that their customers demand. According to
Eric Schuman, a Mutual of Omaha senior systems programmer, "By
using a single solution versus many, we were able to replace
several vendor products, resulting in substantial savings, improved
capacity management, increased efficiency and significant cost
avoidance." Specific benefits included reducing database downtime
by 66 percent or 10,445 hours, and reducing problem tickets by 60
percent or 769 tickets in one year. Mutual of Omaha has also
reduced backup times by 50 percent and has seen a decrease in
customer-impact problem tickets from 1,107 to 338 during a one-year
period of time. Integrating Security "Security is a crucial cog in
our strategy because you cannot adequately improve service with the
threat of security breaches hanging overhead," said Steve Clauson,
vice president of Mutual of Omaha's I/S Security and Compliance
area. "With the help of the BMC Identity Management solutions, we
are well positioned to achieve our strategy." BMC User
Administration and Provisioning has allowed Mutual of Omaha to
automatically provision end-user access to resources based on each
user's business profile, which provides a hassle-free way for
securing IT personnel and authorized users access to key
applications and data. By automating password maintenance, for
example, Mutual of Omaha has reduced its security- related help
desk tickets from 22 percent to 12 percent, which allows IT to
focus on more important projects. In addition to freeing up IT's
time, BMC Identity Management supports Mutual of Omaha's compliance
efforts. Under increased scrutiny by external reviews, BMC User
Administration and Provisioning has helped Mutual of Omaha leverage
identity data to help make sure they are in compliance with
policies and regulations. Mutual of Omaha, in collaboration with
BMC, is planning a 12-18 month security expansion project which
includes implementing BMC Directory Management and Visualization to
aggregate directory information from multiple sources to establish
workflow processes, which will further automate their provisioning
facilities. This new system will allow IT to automatically begin
new hire transactions and provision physical assets immediately.
