State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., the largest home and auto insurer in the U.S., said it had received more than 10,000 claims from the tornadoes and severe storms that struck a large swath of the U.S. in the past week.

The insurer said "a significant number of homes" are likely to be declared uninhabitable or having major structural damage in some areas of North Carolina and Virginia.

The series of tornadoes that traveled from Oklahoma to the East Coast before going out to sea Sunday demolished or damaged schools, homes and commercial buildings, killing at least 45 people and leaving hundreds or thousands homeless or injured. The storms also brought severe hail and high winds.

State Farm said its claims adjusters were also helping customers in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi and other states. Storm-related claims were also reported in Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C.

A tally by SNL Financial shows that State Farm is the largest property insurer when premiums from Alabama, Arkansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Virginia are added up. Allstate Corp. (ALL) ranks second.
