Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNET), today announced its upcoming workshop
"When 2.0: Time and Timing," to be held December 6 at Stanford
University (http://www.release1-0.com/events/). Hosted by Release
1.0 editor Esther Dyson, an influential IT analyst who also runs PC
Forum (a yearly gathering of IT-industry leaders), the workshop
will examine how the element of time can be better exploited by the
software tools and services that help people manage their lives and
businesses. "Increasingly, the world operates in real time. The
challenge for software is no longer simply to save time, but to use
it effectively," said Esther Dyson, editor of Release 1.0 and
editor-at-large, CNET Networks. "Time is hardly an undiscovered
resource, but our tools for managing, understanding, and leveraging
this often forgotten dimension are still primitive. At When 2.0,
workshop attendees will have a unique opportunity to discuss the
opportunities that exist around time and timing." Today, the real
world is dynamic, and time is an essential organizing principle and
dimension in many applications, from clustering photos for tagging,
to establishing appropriate timing for information services such as
when to show ads, send invoices or warn people of impending
disasters. At When 2.0, Dyson will do what she does best -- bring
together investors, entrepreneurs, policymakers and customers
wrestling with these issues. Workshop attendees will hear from
influential thinkers, see demos from innovative startups, learn how
time could enhance their own offerings, and help shape the overall
discussion with their own thoughts and opinions. The workshop will
address the elements of time in two sessions. The morning session,
titled, "Adding Value to Time," will discuss the challenges of
mingling different layers of calendars such as private, group, and
public, and examine how to sew the layers together in a more
useable and seamless way. Featured speakers at the morning session
include Ray Ozzie, CTO of Microsoft; Mitch Kapor, founder of the
Open Source Applications Foundation; and Raymie Stata, chief
architect for search and marketplace at Yahoo. During the afternoon
session, workshop attendees will examine the issue of "Adding Value
with Time," in which time is examined as an underlying factor in
making applications more robust or useful, or in allocating
resources ranging from a consumers' attention to temporary office
space. Featured speakers during the afternoon session include
Tantek Celik, chief technologist at Technorati; John Arenas, CEO of
Worktopia; and Munjal Shah, founder of Ojos. The day will conclude
with a presentation by SimCity creator Will Wright, lead designer
at Maxis, on time and simulation. The conference will also feature
panels on: -- Events as (social) objects -- How do users plan their
public activities? How can events be traded, shared and enriched?
-- Time and functionality -- How can applications use time under
the covers to improve their functionality? -- Time and detection --
How can time patterns help us detect and predict both opportunities
and threats, ranging from potential sales of expensive merchandise
on the one hand, to security and health threats on the other?
Members of the press are invited and encouraged to attend this
event and can contact Sarah Cain in the CNET Networks PR department

session and a list of speakers, plus information on how to
