UMB Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: UMBF) has been recognized by BusinessWeek as one of the nation's Web Smart 50 for the company's implementation of electronic management scorecards. Launched in January 2005 under the leadership of UMB Chief Executive Officer Mariner Kemper and Chief Operating Officer Peter deSilva, the balanced scorecard initiative contains overarching organizational goals and objectives to which the Board of Directors holds UMB accountable. Every UMB region, line of business and functional area sets goals and objectives that directly align with the scorecard. Through a performance management process, associate objectives directly align with every region, line of business or functional area's objectives, and ultimately align with and support the overall goals of UMB. "The objectives and strategies that comprise our scorecard are interdependent and build on one another, which means we must work collaboratively and cohesively as one company to be successful," said Kemper. "The underlying principles with our scorecard are associate accountability and achieving or exceeding the goals for our business and more importantly for our customers." The BusinessWeek Web Smart 50 denotes a group of businesses recognized for initiating successful business strategies through Web-based applications. As reported in the November 21 issue of BusinessWeek, "Even as (Web technologies) convulse entire industries by empowering fleet-footed newcomers, existing companies are quietly employing many of the same innovations to reinvent their operations from the inside. Their efforts rarely make headlines. Nevertheless, these companies are profoundly altering the business landscape. This is their chance to strut." "While the recognition is humbling, we didn't initiate the scorecard process to be identified as an innovator," said deSilva. "We took a commonsense business approach and made it more convenient, flexible and manageable by implementing it through a Web-based platform. It is relatively a simple concept that is improving who we are, how we do business and ultimately what customers and shareholders will expect from UMB." UMB Financial Corporation is a multi-bank holding company headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., offering complete banking and related financial services to both individual and business customers.
