to inch higher, however this morning they are doing so as a unit
with all 15 of the markets that we track currently positive. The
cumulative return on the collective stands at a plus 0.931 percent.
According to a survey published by GfK Martin Hamblin earlier this
morning, the headline index of consumer confidence in the United
Kingdom rose to minus 6 from minus 7 in September. The rise in
confidence came as a surprise as economists had forecast the index
would actually fall to minus 8. Despite the one-point increase in
the index measure in October, consumer confidence in the economy is
still relatively weak compared to recent years thanks to rising
interest rates and a slowdown in the housing market. This fact may
come into play when the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee
next meets on November 4 and it is widely expected to leave rates
unchanged for the third consecutive month. Initial Jobless Claims
for the week ending October 23 are expected to have increased by
9,000, only fractionally offsetting the prior week's surprise
decline of 25,000 to 329,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. So if
you want another excuse for misstating these weekly numbers, try
this quote by a Labor Department statistician, "the magnitude of
the drop partly reflected difficulties in making seasonal
adjustments for weeks that include a holiday. The week of October
16 included the Columbus Day holiday. It's not unusual for weeks
that include a holiday to be more volatile than others." So, make a
note that holiday weeks could offer up erroneous readings and
should not be taken seriously. Be prepared for the investing week

OPPORTUNITIES After filing to go public back in July, DreamWorks
Animation, responsible for several big hits of late - including
"Shrek 2" and "Shark Tale" - will debut in a US$700 million outing
later this week. 29 million shares will be priced between US$23 and
US$25 on the NYSE. Though DreamWorks's estimated US$2.5 billion
market cap adds up to roughly half of that of closest competitor
Pixar, it's nevertheless expected to draw a warm welcome on the
Street. The company recently reported net income totaling US$121
million and operating revenue of US$341 million for the first half
of 2004. Following recent blockbusters, DreamWorks just launched
its new animated series "Father of the Pride," which has been a
success out of the gate. Other projects in the DreamWorks animated
pipeline include "Madagascar," set in the Central Park Zoo and
voiced by Ben Stiller and Chris Rock, and "Over the Hedge," which
stars Bruce Willis as a con-artist raccoon. But it remains to be
seen if DreamWorks can manage to outshine Tuesday's Shopping.com
outing, which leapt as much as 60% in its market debut. Originally
offered at US$18, Shopping.com opened at US$22.95 and closed out
its opening day at US$28.80. This marks the best IPO performance
this year, bettering impressive gains made by Eyetech
Pharmaceuticals, Salesforce.com and Cogent. A total of 11 IPO's
were on this week's calendar, including Build-a-Bear Workshop,
NorthStar Realty Finance, Medical Properties Trust and Aames
Investment. From the Labor Day holiday to last Friday's close,
bankers had priced 38 IPO's. And there haven't been any weak deals
on the IPO calendar. Though not seeing IPO levels like we did in
1999-2000, the IPO market is consistently gaining strength. Receive
