MARKET OVERVIEW The November contract on sweet crude oil rose 93 cents yesterday on the New York Mercantile Exchange to set another new record close. A small gain in U.S. crude inventories fell short of expectations, and fueled some concerns over whether or not energy supplies would be sufficient to meet winter demand. Refineries have begun to recover from the recent spate of hurricanes in the Gulf region, but have been unable to operate at the type of capacity needed at a critical time of year. November heating oil was up $1.41 to $1.4209 per gallon, and November unleaded gas closed up $2.09 at $1.3875 a gallon. It seems that rising oil prices have had a positive effect on the relative value of the dollar. The direction of interest rates will ultimately determine where the dollar will head, and the direction of rates is directly affected by the strength of the domestic economy. Rising rates make the dollar and dollar-based investments more attractive to foreign investors. The greenback gained 0.1 percent versus the euro to $1.2294, and was up 0.2 percent against the British pound to $1.7783.
