Currently just three of the 15 markets that we track are positive with the cumulative average return on the whole group standing at a minus 0.128 percent. The annual inflation rate in the Euro Zone fell in September, but remained above the European Central Bank's (ECB) target for a sixth consecutive month. Eurostat, the European Union's official statistics agency, said consumer prices in the 12 countries that use the euro rose 0.2 percent on the month and 2.1 percent on the year. The figures were generally in line with expectations. Not much on the economic calendar with just the sentiment based October National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Housing Index scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. release. The index has been holding in the high 60's with last month's posting of 68 fairly typical of recent views. As the week progresses a few more pieces of data will trickle in spiced up by the Federal Reserve's rolling side show going on all this week with assorted appearances by governors, presidents, and Greenspan. If third quarter earnings are to be the catalyst to jolt the market out of the insidious range that has characterized its performance for the majority of this year (as many analysts surmise), this is the week that should support or refute that assumption.
