Zone Labs(R), a Check Point Software Technologies(R) company
(Nasdaq:CHKP), today issued a security advisory alerting consumers
to the existence of a new and potentially destructive Internet worm
currently making its way around the globe. Blackworm is circulating
to users via e-mail now, but in a unique twist it won't execute its
harmful payload until February 3. That extra time offers consumers
the ability to update their security software and clean their PC
before any damage can be done, even if they are already infected.
The malicious Blackworm, also known as Blackmal, Kama Sutra, Nyxem,
Blueworm, or Grew, spreads by copying itself to shared network
locations and then sending itself to e-mail addresses found on
affected PCs. Using its own SMTP engine, Blackworm uses different
subjects, email bodies and attachments to entice a computer user.
On February 3, the worm will harm infected computers by destroying
all Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, PSD and ZIP files on
all available drives. "Because our chief concern at Zone Labs is
consumer protection, it is extremely important to alert consumers
of the potential dangers while also offering them essential tools
and solutions," said Laura Yecies, general manager at Zone Labs and
vice president at Check Point. "With hundreds of thousands of
infections worldwide, this is the most expansive malware attack in
2006. However, by communicating this message to consumers, we hope
to mitigate the risk and prevent a major disruption from
occurring." For the most comprehensive protection, computer users
should make sure their anti-virus solution is up-to-date and run a
scan as soon as possible. If their PC is currently unsecured,
ZoneAlarm(R) Internet Security Suite, ZoneAlarm Pro, ZoneAlarm
AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware all stop Blackworm. Even prior
to a scan and update, ZoneAlarm customers benefit from an
additional layer of proactive protection found in the OSFirewall.
The OSFirewall is specifically designed to guard against threats
such as worms, spyware, keyloggers, and rootkits by closely
monitoring internal computing resources like vital files, registry
keys and start-up processes at the core of the PC. It goes beyond
the user level to inspect activity between computer applications
and prevent the reading of memory and loading of malicious drivers
and services. Besides blocking traditional attacks, the OSFirewall
guards against devious programs that may hide within a legitimate
download. Related Resources: Zone Labs Virus Information Center:
