On Tuesday morning, Senator Dick Day announced he will be
resigning his Minnesota Senate seat to head up Racino Now, a new
organization dedicated to passing Racino legislation in
Minnesota.
Senator Day has been a leading advocate at the Capitol for
Racino legislation, which would authorize the addition of slot
gaming at Minnesota’s two existing horse racing tracks.
The Racino proposal has consistently received the support of 70%
of Minnesotans in polls. Also, according to numerous market
studies, passage of Racino legislation would generate approximately
$250 million in new state tax revenue every budget cycle, create
thousands of new jobs, and spur growth in Minnesota’s horse
industry.
Canterbury Park President Randy Sampson commented, “I’m excited
about the Senator’s announcement and the enthusiasm and passion
Senator Day brings to the Racino debate. Despite the support of the
vast majority of Minnesotans, we continue to run into roadblocks at
the Capitol. I believe Senator Day can bring the Racino discussion
to the people of Minnesota and elevate the issue to a level where
it can no longer be ignored by the legislature.”
Sampson concluded, “The Racino proposal still faces significant
opposition at the Capitol, but I am hopeful that with Senator Day
leading Racino Now on a full-time basis, Minnesota will finally get
the vote it deserves on this common-sense solution to increasing
our state’s revenues and creating new jobs.”
