SANTA CLARA, Calif.,
Oct. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Aviat
Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVNW), a leading expert in wireless
transmission solutions, announced that it has been selected by the
State of West Virginia to expand
their existing microwave network to provide high capacity IP
transport connectivity that will form a key component of the West
Virginia Statewide Broadband Infrastructure Project. Aviat Networks
is a key partner with the State on this project, which will create
the infrastructure for widespread broadband service. Construction
is already underway and the project is scheduled for completion by
the end of 2012.

The West Virginia Statewide Broadband Infrastructure Project
will bring high-speed Internet access to underserved regions by
expanding the State's existing microwave public safety network. The
expanded statewide network expects to directly connect more than
1,000 anchor institutions, including public safety agencies, public
libraries, schools, government offices, and other critical
community facilities, at speeds of up to 45 Mbps. As a result of
this project, every K–12 school in the state will have a high-speed
Internet connection. In addition, access to healthcare, distance
learning opportunities, and broadband and video applications for
emergency first responders will be greatly expanded. The project
will also spur the deployment of affordable broadband service to
more than 700,000 households, 110,000 businesses, and 1,500
institutions, by allowing local Internet service providers to
connect to the State's open network. Microwave is an ideal solution
for providing connectivity throughout the Mountain State, as an
alternative to deploying fiber which could be impractical and/or
extremely costly.
"The State of West Virginia is
proud to be working with Aviat Networks on such a critical project
for Public Safety," said Jimmy
Gianato, Director/Homeland Security Advisor, West Virginia
Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. "The
microwave equipment and services provided by them are an important
link in our communications infrastructure and key to our broadband
expansion throughout all West
Virginia. The ability of our first responders to communicate
across the state during everyday operations as well as during
disasters is vital to our ability to protect our citizens. The
connectivity allows us to enhance our services and bring future
applications to West Virginian's today."
Aviat Networks has been working closely with the State to
provide microwave transmission solutions and services for more than
30 years. This project is the latest in that close collaboration,
where Aviat was again selected due to their experience and
credibility in designing, building and supporting mission critical
microwave solutions in the US. Aviat will deploy their advanced
Eclipse Packet Node platform to provide a new high-speed IP-based
overlay microwave network, which also significantly expands their
existing legacy microwave network across the entire state. The
Eclipse platform supports essential features providing the critical
backbone of the State's new broadband network, including proven
high reliability, fully redundant architecture, hybrid TDM plus
Ethernet transport, and highly secure management and transmission
features.
"One cannot place a value on saving human lives," said Joe
Gonzalez Director of Communications, Office of Emergency Medical
Services. "The microwave system is about saving lives. Just as
arteries carry the vital blood of life, the microwave system
carries the vital communications for West
Virginia."
"We are extremely pleased to play a key role in this new
broadband Project in West
Virginia," says Michael
Pangia, president and CEO of Aviat Networks. "We believe
that our significant presence in North
America, combined with our expertise in supplying highly
reliable microwave systems for mission critical public safety
applications for local, state and federal government organizations
across the country, will help to ensure the success of this
important initiative."
