'Sprint Car Capital of the World' Gets Secure Network From ARRIS,
Mediacom Communications and Rankin Communication Systems, Inc.
SUWANEE, Ga., May 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ARRIS (NASDAQ:ARRS)
today announced that, in conjunction with local cable operator
Mediacom Communications and Rankin Communication Systems, Inc., it
has created a secure, packet-encrypted broadband network and VLAN
to provide the Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa with a backbone
for its upgraded ticket scanning system to accommodate the 24,000
seat raceway. The Knoxville Raceway was originally built in the
late 1800s and today is known as 'the Sprint Car Capital of the
World'. The raceway wanted to install a high-speed network to carry
information between handheld WiFi ticket scanners and the local and
off-site authentication servers. However, at this 1.4 million
square foot complex the only broadband transport system in place
was 1,600 feet of buried outdoor coaxial cable plant, deployed by
Mediacom Communications to support an on-site CCTV system. The
ARRIS CXM proprietary Ethernet-over-coax technology proved to be
the perfect solution. Working above 900 MHz, it did not interfere
with any of the existing video or cable modem traffic on Mediacom's
cable TV plant and a packet-encrypted network was quickly created
using the existing coax that was capable of delivering speeds of 36
Mbps downstream and 24 Mbps upstream. A local VLAN was easily
constructed to allow handheld scanners to access the local server
via an Ethernet connection. ARRIS personnel worked with Mediacom
techs and Rankin representatives to install the equipment in just a
few hours, providing five 10/100 Ethernet connections at different
locations along Mediacom's coaxial plant. "We've been very happy
with how well the ARRIS CXM system works on the coax cable we
already had installed at the Raceway," said Curt Snodgrass,
Mediacom's Technical Services Manager. "It enhances the Raceway's
ability to more efficiently handle ticket sales and doesn't
interfere with any of our other video or data services." "This is
another innovative application from the ARRIS CXM line," noted
George Junca, ARRIS CXM Director of Sales. "It proves once more
that wherever there is coax, ARRIS CXM can deliver high speed
solutions." "We have not had a single trouble call on the ARRIS CXM
system," said Bob Rankin, President & CEO of Rankin
Communication Systems, Inc. "We couldn't be happier and would
definitely recommend this solution to others." About ARRIS ARRIS
