AJC Poll Shows Edwards 'Southern Strategy' Failing; Edwards Finishes 7th in Poll of Georgia Democrats ATLANTA, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The campaign of North Carolina Senator and Democrat Presidential hopeful John Edwards was counting on Southern States to propel Edwards to the nomination. According to recent polls, however, that strategy has failed. According to a poll released today by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Edwards would finish 7th in Georgia, garnering just 3.8% of the vote. "This is a serious blow to the Edwards campaign," said Alec Poitevint, Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party. "If these numbers are indicative of Southerners' views of Senator Edwards, it may be time for him to drop this Presidential bid." Edwards has consistently polled near the bottom of the pack in national polls as well. In a Newsweek poll conducted last week, Edwards was next-to- last with only 5%. In the key early primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire, Edwards fairs only slightly better, receiving 7% and 6% respectively. "Obviously, the Edwards campaign has stalled. The strategy of Democrats talking like moderates and voting like liberals did not work in the 2002 elections and it will not work for Edwards in 2004," concluded Poitevint.
