FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SCM Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCMM; Prime Standard: SMY), a leading provider of solutions that open the Digital World, today announced that two of its physical access control terminals (PACT) have been approved by the U.S. Government Services Administration (GSA) to be compliant with Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD)-12. As a result, SCM PACT terminals PAT1312 and PAT1322 are the first to be included on the FIPS 201 Approved Product List of the GSA that governs which products and services may be purchased by federal agencies for the HSPD-12 program. Presidential order HSPD-12 requires all government employees and contractors to carry a standard identity credential for secure physical and logical (network) access that works across all agencies, including the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, Department of Interior, and all other federal agencies. To satisfy the technical requirements of HSPD-12, the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) developed Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 201 (FIPS 201) -- a United States federal government standard specifying Personal Identity Verification (PIV) requirements for federal employees and contractors. The FIPS 201 certification enables SCM Microsystems to provide government agencies and contractors with its PACT terminals to secure access to buildings, campuses, parts of buildings and internal rooms. SCM's PACT terminals have either a contactless or a combined contactless/PINpad interface and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor usage. The flexible design enables the terminals to replace legacy systems while leveraging new technologies, without having to change the current infrastructure or wiring. The terminals are designed to be compatible with both existing and future identification credentials issued under HSPD-12. "In addition to these physical access control terminals, nine other SCM smart card readers are compliant with HSPD-12 and are thus on the FIPS 201 GSA Product List," said Robert Schneider, chief executive officer of SCM Microsystems. "This further demonstrates our deep involvement with industry standards and our ability to support federal customers with innovative access control products that meet their requirements and needs." Additional SCM reader products have already been submitted to the GSA's testing cycle and, if determined to be conformant, will also be added to the FIPS 201 Products List.
