  UNILEVER COMPLETES SALE OF SPECIALITY CHEMICALS BUSINESSES

Unilever today confirmed the completion of the sale of its
international speciality chemicals businesses -- National
Starch and Chemical Company, Quest International, Unichema
International and Crosfield -- to ICI for a debt free price of
$8 billion.  Agreement to the sale was originally announced on
May 7 1997.

In the year to December 31 1996, the businesses sold generated
an operating profit of $562 million (#360m approx) on sales of
$4.7 billion (#3bn approx) and had net assets of $2.1bn
(#1.3bn approx), before deducting inter-company balances.  The
sale results in an exceptional gain for Unilever which will be
reported in Unilever's second quarter results.  The profit has
been estimated at $5bn (#3.0bn approx) before expenses and
tax.
