LETTER TO: COMPANY ANNOUNCEMENTS OFFICE

We hereby advise that we have today received the following notification in
respect of the ordinary shares of 25p each in this company:-

1.  At close of business on 17 May 1999, Goldman Sachs & Co. ("GS&Co"),was
interested in 1,617,771 ordinary shares of 25p each (3.11% of the issued
ordinary share capital).  Of these, the interest in 1,525,000 arose through
GS&Co acting as custodian.  These shares are registered in the name of Goldman
Sachs Securities (Nominees), Limited.

2.  GS&Co is a member of the Goldman Sachs group of companies.  The Goldman
Sachs Group, Inc.  ("GS Inc") of 85 Broad Street, new York, NY 10004, USA is the
holding company of GS&Co and, under the terms of Section 203 of the Act, GS Inc
was interested by attribution only in the shares held by its subsidiary GS&Co.

3.  At close of business on 17 May 1999, GS Inc was interested, by attribution
only, in a total of 1,617,773 ordinary shares of 25p each.  This total interest
comprised shares held by GS&Co as set forth above, and 2 other shares which were
held by another subsidiary of GS Inc and registered in the name of Goldman Sachs
Equity Securities Limited.
