                          Purchase of New Star shares                          

New Star announces that yesterday it purchased on market for cancellation
420,000 Ordinary shares of 5p each in New Star ("New Star shares") at an
average price of 339.5p per share.

This purchase was made because the opportunity arose to acquire New Star shares
at a price that New Star's Directors considered to be an attractive price.

The Directors may make similar such purchases in the future if appropriate
opportunities arise.
