VoIP in Singapore recently received a major boost after the government decided to liberalise the VoIP market. The government plans to issue new 8-digit numbers to VoIP service providers. According to iLocus the Singapore market has 10 service providers serving approximately 30,000 customers. In 2005 the Malaysian regulator dropped the price of a VoIP licence from 80,000 dollars to 8,000 dollars. Consequently Malaysia has become an extremely active market with more than 80 service providers holding an Application Service Provider (ASP) licence for VoIP services. According to iLocus there are about 40,000 subscribers to a VoIP service in Malaysia.
