                                Trading Update


Dobbies Garden Centres plc ("Dobbies") today announces that total sales in the
Christmas trading period increased by 40% compared with the previous year.
Like- for-like sales, which excludes first time contributions from any new or
redeveloped stores, were up 20%.

James Barnes, Chief Executive of Dobbies, commented: "We are delighted with
the growth we have experienced in our Christmas trading over the past few
years and believe that further growth will be possible in the future. We are
now regarded as a destination for Christmas decorations and gifts as well as
for traditional garden centre products."

The Company's Preliminary results for the year ended 31 October 2001 will be
announced on 12 February 2002.
