Atlantic Telecom launches first phase of pan-European DSL service
Atlantic Telecom Group PLC, a leading European broadband telecommunications
provider, announces today the launch of its DSL (digital subscriber line)
service in Frankfurt, making it one of the first companies to install SDSL
broadband technology in Germany. The service, which will be provided through
Atlantic s subsidiary, first:telecom, will offer high speed Internet access
to businesses throughout the Frankfurt area via one of its first Internet
Service Provider (ISP) partners, Interaktiv.
The first phase of the DSL rollout uses 7 fully operational central offices
(COs) out of 17 earmarked in Frankfurt and the surrounding area, and Atlantic
intends to rapidly roll out its service across the rest of its target markets
in Germany. Munich is scheduled to go live at the end of Summer 2000 and
Berlin and Hamburg will follow shortly after.
The Group is partnering with ISPs to offer a seamless bundle of products
including: connections at up to 2.3Mbit/s with equal upload and download
speeds; a permanently open or "always on" connection and flat rate charges
(no per minute billing). This wholesale approach allows ISPs to retain and
extend their contacts with their customers, while customers can continue to
deal with their existing ISP, have a single point of contact for service, and
receive a single bill for connection, web hosting, and other services offered
by the ISP.
Graham J Duncan, Executive Chairman of Atlantic Telecom, commented
"We are delighted to announce the launch of the first phase of our
pan-European data service on SDSL technology. This will revolutionise the
way companies operate, allowing them to exploit internet opportunities
previously denied them by cost and bandwidth restrictions.
"We are committed to roll out our SDSL service in the UK, France and Germany
as soon as access for new entrants to the local loop is permitted - a
process which is due to start in the UK during 2001. We expect to be able to
deploy services rapidly and widely, creating a large footprint and reaching
more businesses across more locations than our competitors."
