TOKYO--Japan's transport ministry said Friday it will ask All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines Co. (9201.TO) later in the day to take additional steps to ensure the safety of Boeing Co.'s (BA) 787 Dreamliner on top of safety measures launched by the jet maker.

The extra steps include the remote monitoring of battery data and conducting test fights at least once for each 787 flight crew before resuming commercial service.

Those steps are requests by the ministry and not legally binding actions, said Shigeru Takano, the head of the ministry's regulatory team in charge of approving the resumption.

The ministry said earlier in the day that it will officially lift the order grounding the Dreamliner later Friday.

Battery problems on two Boeing 787 Dreamliners in January led to the global grounding of the high-tech jet.
