Company is Ready to Deliver All Winter Long PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- As temperatures begin to approach freezing and customers adjust their thermostats because of cold winter weather, PECO is ready to provide reliable gas service all winter long thanks to $12.3 million in new system upgrades. PECO's natural gas distribution system serves more than 480,000 suburban customers in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties. The utility has completed 25 capacity expansion projects, which included the replacement of 26,000 feet of smaller underground gas main with larger diameter plastic gas mains to handle increased load and increased pressure. The company also completed 66 projects to replace 58,000 feet of cast iron and bare steel gas lines with plastic gas mains, which has proven to be more durable and easier to maintain. The system upgrades include $3.6 million in new, larger gas distribution lines serving customers in Haverford, Lansdowne, Narberth, Hatboro, Upper Darby, Wynnewood, and Glenside and $8.7 million for installation of new plastic gas main in Springfield, Havertown, Narberth, Lansdowne, Clifton Heights, Villanova, Prospect Park, Darby, Trainer, Warrington, Cheltenham, Warminster, Bensalem, Norristown, Berwyn, and Coatesville. "PECO heavily invests in projects each year to ensure our customers receive safe and reliable gas and electric service," said Craig Adams, PECO senior vice president and chief operating officer. "We have a duty to provide safe and reliable service to our customers. Whether it be electric or gas, we intend to never stop working to fulfill that commitment." During the past 20 years, PECO has made significant upgrades to its natural gas delivery system and expanded capacity, serving about 7,000 new customers each year -- all without an increase in the company's delivery and service charges since 1988. By saving customers money through the use of new technologies, increasing sales, operational mergers and other efficiencies PECO charges remain among the lowest in Pennsylvania. The investment in upgraded gas distribution facilities is an example of more than $355 million in capital improvements the company has made this year in its gas and electric facilities across the region. PECO's gas distribution system consists of 31 gas gate stations, which connect regional interstate pipelines that bring gas supplies to the area, and 6,600 miles of underground distribution mains and more than 6,500 miles of service line. Throughout the year, PECO will deliver nearly 80 billion cubic feet of natural gas to local residential, commercial and industrial customers in suburban counties. Based in Philadelphia, PECO is an electric and natural gas utility serving 1.6 million electric and 480,000 natural gas customers in southeastern Pennsylvania. In 2006, the company delivered 38.2 million megawatt-hours (Mwh) of electricity and 76.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas to residential, business and institutional customers. Founded in 1881, PECO is one of the Greater Philadelphia Region's most active corporate citizens, providing leadership, volunteer and financial support to numerous arts and culture, education, environmental, economic development and community programs and organizations.
