MILAN-- Telecom Italia said Wednesday that it has appointed Flavio Cattaneo as the firm's new chief executive.

Mr. Cattaneo will replace Marco Patuano, who resigned earlier this month over clashes with Telecom Italia's board and its principal shareholder, French firm Vivendi.

The decision was taken at a board meeting on Wednesday.

Mr. Cattaneo is currently chief executive of NTV--Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori--a train operator.

He has been a member of the board at Telecom Italia since 2014.
