Brazil mobile phone subscriptions rose to 194.4 million in October, up 1.55% from September, according to figures released late Thursday by telecommunications regulator Anatel.

New subscriptions totaled 2.96 million in October, compared with 2.04 million additions in September, Anatel said.

Vivo Participacoes SA (VIVO4.BR) maintained market leadership in October, with a 30.03% share of subscriptions, compared with 30.14% in September.

Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF.MC) recently agreed to buy Portugal Telecom SGPS SA's (PTC.LB) controlling share in Vivo.

Claro, the local unit of Mexico's America Movil SA (AMX.MX), was in the No. 2 position in October with a 25.58% market share, up slightly from 25.47% in the previous month.

TIM Participacoes SA (TCSL4.BR) was in third place with 24.67%, up from 24.52% the month before. TIM is the local unit of Telecom Italia SpA (TIT.MI).

In fourth-place, mobile-phone operator Oi (TNLP4.BR) registered a share of 19.35% in October, down from 19.51% the previous month.
