CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Goodrich Corporation
(NYSE: GR) has received an order from the U.S. Army to provide 80
spare health and usage management system (HUMS) electronic units
for the Army's UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The units will
be produced by Goodrich's Sensors and Integrated Systems business
in Vergennes, Vt. Deliveries are
expected to commence in early 2013.
"It started as an R&D project in Vermont, but HUMS has become a vital
life-saving and cost-saving tool that now is standard equipment on
military helicopters," said Senator Patrick
Leahy (D-Vt.). "I am so proud of the important work that
Goodrich is doing in our state," he added. Senator Leahy, a senior
member of the Senate Appropriations Committee's Defense
Subcommittee, has been a long-time supporter of Goodrich's work in
Vergennes, including the
technology behind HUMS.
Tony Wurmel, general manager of Goodrich Sensors and Integrated
Systems in Vergennes said, "This
award highlights the value that the Goodrich HUMS brings in
lowering operating and maintenance costs while enhancing safety for
the Army's Black Hawk fleet. We thank Senator Leahy for his strong
support over the last decade in helping the Army equip its
frontline helicopter fleet with this cost-effective system; it will
help the troops remain effective and maintain the fleet at high
readiness in an uncertain world."
The HUMS system has contributed to lower operating costs and
increased effectiveness for Army Black Hawk helicopters in
executing important safety and rescue missions during ongoing
conflicts in Iraq and
Afghanistan. In recent deployments the Black Hawks with HUMS
had 17% lower total maintenance costs with a greater than 50%
reduction in unscheduled maintenance, enhancing readiness for
critical troop transport and medical evacuation missions.
Goodrich provides HUMS for numerous U.S. military platforms,
including the Army UH-60 and CH-47 fleets, Marine Corp. CH-53,
AH-1, UH-1, & V-22 fleets, and the Navy MH-60 fleet. Goodrich
has delivered more than 2,000 units to the U.S. Army alone.
