Gateway Takes Entertainment Prime Time With Its First Media Center
PC for Retail Gateway 820GM Desktop PC is Full of Power With
Easy-to-Use Entertainment Features and New Microsoft Software; New
Design is Quiet and Cool LOS ANGELES, Oct. 12
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gateway today launched the Gateway 820GM
Media Center PC, the company's first Media Center PC for sale
through its retail channel as well as its first to feature
Microsoft's new Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 operating
system. (Logo:

available beginning this weekend at leading electronics and
technology retailers throughout North America. The Gateway(R)
820GM, displayed for the first time today at Microsoft's Digital
Entertainment Anywhere launch event, is the ultimate PC for all
around fun, digital media hobbies and productivity. The Gateway
820GM combines the latest technology and design with entertainment
capabilities that let users accomplish more with their PC. In
addition to providing all the benefits of a fully equipped PC, the
new Gateway 820GM has a built-in TV tuner, so it can be used as a
Personal Video Recorder (PVR) and as a TV when connected to a
display. It also can be used as an FM radio, DVD burner/player and
CD player. The innovative system uses Gateway's new patent-pending
PC design based on Intel's BTX architecture, so it provides cooling
and noise reduction benefits to complement the system's
entertainment capabilities and new Microsoft Windows XP Media
Center Edition 2005 software. Gateway leads the industry in
BTX-based PCs; the company was first to market with one in August.
"Our new full-featured Gateway 820GM is the ideal system for anyone
looking for a PC with the horsepower and easy user interface to
take on the latest entertainment applications, digital hobbies and
games," said Ed Fisher, Gateway's senior vice president of product
planning. "Plus, the PC's cutting edge technology and the
capabilities of Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 mean
that customers will be enjoying their PC in new ways with little
effort required." Cool Design Handles Latest Technology; Quiet
Enough for Any Room in the Home The PC's innovative patent-pending
Gateway design, which is based on Intel's BTX architecture,
provides the ideal foundation for the Media Center PC. The new
design features a super-efficient cooling system that creates a
central wind tunnel to cool internal components. As a result, the
PC can handle hot components with ease, including the latest
high-speed processors, as well as the fastest and most
power-consuming graphics cards, add-in cards and hard drives
available today and in the future. Plus, the cooling system reduces
failures due to overheating, thereby increasing overall
reliability. The new Gateway 820GM uses large fans that spin at 40
percent slower speeds than typical ones, so the PC operates at a
whisper-quiet operation suitable for any room in the home such as
the den, office, family room or bedroom. As a result, customers
will be able to watch live or prerecorded TV, listen to music, play
games and edit digital video, without being distracted by PC noise.
Using Media Center 2005, the Gateway 820GM is Ready for Fun The
foundation for the easy-to-use entertainment capabilities is
Microsoft's new Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 operating
system. Taking advantage of the software, Gateway 820GM
incorporates the latest technology that takes PC entertainment to
the next level, including a TV / FM tuner that lets consumers enjoy
television programs and FM radio by tuning a simple software
interface. Also, consumers can access the PC's entertainment
functionality with the easy-to-use remote control that comes
standard with the PC. "Windows XP Media Center 2005 offers
consumers new ways to enjoy their digital entertainment without
having to compromise on PC functionality," said Will Poole, senior
vice president of the Windows client business at Microsoft Corp.
"The explosion of digital media now requires products that offer
consumers fully integrated entertainment experiences in sleek new
form-factors that not only meet but exceed our customer
expectations, and Windows XP Media Center 2005 truly delivers."
Additionally, consumers can use the Gateway 820GM Media Center as
their own Personal Video Recorder (PVR) to have full control over
live and recorded TV programs. PVR programming lets consumers
search for their favorite shows and then record them for a later
date. Live TV controls give TV enthusiasts the ability to record,
pause, rewind and skip through live entertainment. FM radio can
even be paused and rewound. For fast handling of digital content,
the new PC features an Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor 530 (3.0
GHz) with Hyper Threading (HT) Technology(1), the ideal complement
to Microsoft's new software. HT Technology enables users to enjoy
multiple entertainment and computing functions at the same time,
such as recording a TV program while playing a 3D game, or editing
digital video while listening to FM radio. Additionally, the new PC
utilizes the Intel(R) 915G chipset, which provides improved
multimedia performance to support the hottest game titles. The
dedicated ATI RADEON X300SE PCI-Express 128MB graphics card takes
advantage of PCI Express technology in the Intel 915G chipset to
provide enhanced digital media performance and graphics playback.
Intel High Definition Audio technology brings high fidelity sound
quality to the PC for a true home theater experience. Sharing
photos and home movies with family and friends is easy with the
Gateway 820GM. The PC's 8X DVD+/-RW multi-format drive allows
consumers to easily burn digital video and photos onto DVD media
that can be viewed in home DVD players. Also, the drive uses new
double-layer DVD technology to give PC users up to 8.5GB of data on
double-layer DVD media -- that's twice the space for their digital
photos and video. In addition, the Gateway 820GM comes with a
DVD-ROM. The Gateway 820GM incorporates other great technology that
contributes to the system's high performance, including 1GB of DDR
dual channel memory that can be expanded to 4GB, as well as Gigabit
(10/100/1000) Ethernet, which ensures a fast connection to a
network. The PC also includes an 8-in-1 media card reader, which
accepts the most popular media cards used in digital devices such
as digital cameras and camcorders, as well as a huge 250GB(2)
7200RPM serial ATA hard drive. The new Gateway 820GM is priced at a
manufacturer's suggested retail price of $1,249.99. Beginning this
weekend, it will be available at leading electronics and technology
retailers. The PC comes standard with Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP
Media Center Edition 2005. Gateway's commitment to quality and
reliability is evident in its award-winning line of PCs as well as
in its top-notch service and support programs. The company's
extensive online support center helps customers maximize their PC
investment; it gives them easy access to customer support
representatives and information on important issues such as
warranties, technical issues and upgrading. Additionally, Gateway
offers a proactive service tool called BigFix(R) at no charge on
all its PCs. With the customer's permission, BigFix identifies and
sends messages offering upgrades to enhance the performance or
capabilities of the PC. The Gateway 820GM Media Center PC is
supported by the company's standard limited warranty options.
