EEI Honors Allegheny Energy, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company for
Hurricane Recovery Assistance SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 5
/PRNewswire/ -- The Edison Electric Institute today honored
Allegheny Energy and the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, a
subsidiary of Baltimore-based Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG), as
winners of the association's "Emergency Assistance Award" for their
outstanding efforts in helping restore electricity following the
punishing hurricanes that struck the coasts of Alabama and Florida
last year. EEI's "Emergency Response" and "Emergency Assistance"
awards are presented annually to both U.S. and foreign-based member
companies to recognize outstanding efforts in restoring electric
service that has been disrupted by severe weather conditions or
other natural events. Winners are selected by a panel of judges
following a national and international nomination process. Awards
were presented during EEI's winter CEO meetings here Wednesday.
Both Mid-Atlantic electric companies sent hundreds of workers and
equipment to Florida and Alabama to help power companies in those
states restore electricity from what was perhaps the most punishing
hurricane season on record. Complicating the assistance efforts of
both Allegheny and BGE was the fact that both companies had to
prepare for the likelihood that their respective service
territories could be impacted by remnants of the storms. Even
before the storms made landfall, both companies had developed
contingency plans that enabled them to effectively deploy resources
where they were needed most, and when the calls came out from the
Southeast, both companies were able to respond swiftly. In some
cases, contract employees working on routine maintenance activities
in their home service territories were dispatched to Alabama and
Florida to help with the arduous task of rebuilding badly damaged
electric power systems virtually from the ground up. "I am pleased
to honor the men and women of Baltimore Gas and Electric and
Allegheny Energy with these awards," said EEI President Tom Kuhn.
"These natural disasters prompted a massive call to action, and
their unhesitating response was in keeping with our industry's
unswerving tradition of public service." Edison Electric Institute
(EEI) is the association of United States investor-owned electric
utilities and industry affiliates and associates worldwide. Its
domestic members generate approximately three-quarters of all the
electricity generated by electric utilities in the country and
serve about 70 percent of all ultimate customers in the nation.
