Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG) announced today that Michael D.
Smith will lead solar sales and green initiatives for the company’s
competitive retail energy businesses. In this new role, Smith will
oversee the development and implementation of sustainable product
offerings, including renewable generation, energy efficiency,
demand response and greenhouse gas reduction strategies. In
addition, Smith will lead the company’s growing solar power
business and a dedicated commercial solar sales team focused on the
rapid deployment of customer-sited solar installations. As senior
vice president of retail green initiatives for Constellation
NewEnergy, Smith reports jointly to Mark Huston, managing director
of retail energy, Constellation Energy and Michael Kagan, president
of retail power, Constellation NewEnergy.
“Constellation Energy is among the industry leaders in providing
customers with both renewable energy and services to manage energy
consumption,” said Mark Huston, managing director of retail energy,
Constellation Energy. “Integrating oversight of the company’s
sustainable product initiatives enables us to offer customers a
comprehensive suite of green products and services to match their
energy and environmental goals. Mike’s extensive energy experience
leading international carbon and renewables operations will help us
drive continued growth and innovation in sustainable energy
initiatives.”
Constellation Energy is committed to solar project development
over the next several years. Currently, the company has
approximately 25 megawatts of solar power systems installed or
under way in the U.S., ranging from 200-kilowatt, customer-sited
rooftop installations to a 17.1-megawatt large-scale project in
Emmitsburg, Md., that will be among the largest in the U.S.
Constellation Energy finances, designs, constructs and owns these
solar installations and supplies power generated on-site to the
customer over a period of 15 to 20 years. This creates an
attractive and affordable model that requires no upfront capital
from customers, and reduces customers’ use of power from the
electrical grid and associated carbon emissions.
Smith joined Constellation Energy in 2003. He previously served
as vice president and director of Constellation Energy’s
international energy policy office in London, where he managed
Constellation Energy’s activities in the European Union carbon and
renewable energy markets, among other regulatory activities.
