Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship Goes Carbon Neutral
October 06 2008 - 10:16AM
Business Wire
Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) today announced that this years
Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship will be made
carbon neutral by countering an estimated 1,400 metric tons of
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through on-site actions and the
purchase of offsets. The Senior Players Championship will be held
Oct. 6-12, 2008, at the Baltimore Country Club in Timonium, Md. At
this years Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, were
advancing to the next level of environmental stewardship and
accountability by taking measures to achieve a carbon neutral
event, said Mayo A. Shattuck III, chairman, president and chief
executive officer of Constellation Energy. This tournament
presented us with an opportunity to continue addressing global
climate change on both a local and national level, and we look
forward to continuing our efforts to effectively reduce greenhouse
gas emissions through innovative energy solutions. Making the 2008
Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship a carbon-neutral
event is a first for the Champions Tour, which means that the GHG
footprint associated with the tournament has been calculated and
will be reduced through on-site actions and offset via the purchase
of certified hydrogen carbon credits and Renewable Energy
Certificates (RECs). In 2007, the Constellation Energy Senior
Players Championship became the first PGA TOUR or Champions Tour
event to be powered by 100 percent clean, renewable energy. To
assess the anticipated GHG impact for the tournament, Constellation
Energy used the ecolinkTM carbon management platform, an innovative
tool developed by Pace Global, which is the focal point of
Constellation NewEnergys carbon footprinting service. The scope of
the assessment included tournament staff, the professional players,
spectators, event volunteers, event vehicles, vendors and the
course itself. Specifically, emissions from a number of sources
were estimated, including transportation, country club facilities,
lodging and on-site generation. Constellation Energy is
implementing the following initiatives to make this years event
carbon neutral: Purchase of 1,400 carbon credits from a
Kyoto-certified small hydro project, which will be utilized to
offset all non-electricity-related GHG emissions associated with
the event. Purchase of an estimated 69 megawatt-hours of Green-e
Energy Certified wind RECs to offset emissions associated with
electricity usage at the Baltimore Country Club and hotel
accommodations throughout the event. The use of bio-diesel in
on-site generators. The carpet in all tents and hospitality suites,
as well all plastic and cardboard generated from course concessions
and tournament materials, will be recycled. The PGA TOUR is
extremely proud to work with Constellation Energy to make this
years Senior Players Championship a carbon neutral event, said
Timothy W. Finchem, commissioner of the PGA TOUR. Were sending a
powerful message to our fans across the world about the importance
of environmental responsibility and working together to reduce our
collective carbon footprint. About the Constellation Energy Senior
