BALTIMORE, April 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) today announced that the refueling outage on Unit 1 of its Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby, Md. was completed at approximately 6:48 p.m., April 11, 2006. The outage duration was 49 days, 21 hrs, and 42 minutes. In addition to standard refueling activities, Constellation Energy plant staff replaced and inspected systems and equipment as a proactive measure to ensure continued equipment reliability through the remainder of Unit 1's operating license, which expires in 2034. Equipment enhancements included the replacement of Unit 1's reactor vessel head (RVH), turbine control system, two 500-kilovolt breakers, as well as upgrades to the main condenser and circulating water systems. The plant staff also performed a reactor coolant system inspection and maintenance. "These upgrades are an investment in generation reliability as well as part of our commitment to safe operation," said Jim Spina, vice president of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. "I am extremely pleased by how well the site performed given the scope and significance of work involved. More than one year of in-depth planning and preparation set the stage for a well- executed and successful outage." Prior to the outage, Unit 1 had completed a year of continuous safe operation, and was a major contributing factor to Calvert Cliffs producing 14.73 million megawatts of electricity in 2005, the most ever generated by the plant's two units. Constellation Energy owns and operates the Calvert Cliffs facility. In 2000, Calvert Cliffs became the first nuclear power plant in the nation to earn extended licenses from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission - through 2034 for Unit 1 and through 2036 for Unit 2. Constellation Energy (http://www.constellation.com/), a FORTUNE 200 company with 2005 revenues of $17.1 billion, is the nation's largest competitive supplier of electricity to large commercial and industrial customers and the nation's largest wholesale power seller.
