Tumbleweed Survey Reveals Majority of Organizations Use Insecure Methods for Transferring Sensitive Files

Business Wire
Tumbleweed Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:TMWD), the industrys
leading pure play messaging security vendor, today released key
survey findings on approaches and concerns for managed file
transfer, particularly in the financial and healthcare sectors.
Tumbleweed, Ziff Davis and The Strategy Group, an independent
research company, conducted a survey among 1159 IT executives to
learn about how they transfer sensitive data and files. When probed
about the greatest file transfer concerns, 83 percent of
respondents noted compromise of security as one of their top two
file transfer worries, while 73 percent responded loss of personal
data as a top fear. Despite expressing concern for keeping data
and files safe, survey respondents went on to indicate they rely on
insecure file transfer practices to exchange data, like email or
homegrown file transfer solutions. Email is the most common method
for file transfer, with 87 percent of companies utilizing it,
despite security shortcomings and attachment size limits. Email is
followed by homegrown file transfers (FTP) servers, with 83 percent
of companies using them, even with marginal data security and
reporting. Unlike email and homegrown solutions, secure file
transfer products, like Tumbleweeds SecureTransport product
suite, ensure secure file transfer while preventing the loss of
customer, partner and personal data. With Tumbleweeds
SecureTransport product suite, organizations can accept, validate,
and secure incoming connections and file transfers, regardless of
file size, ranging from small files to extremely large ones. The
product suite is based on open standards allowing for consolidation
of homegrown FTP server solutions, for central system management
and monitoring across multiple sites or applications. The
SecureTransport product suite encrypts all files on the server to
the end user ensuring security and reliability of information at
all times during transmission. However, many survey respondents
acknowledge the need to implement Secure FTP, with 28 percent
planning to implement this solution over the next 12 months,
indicating a trend to move away from email or homegrown FTP to a
more secure file transfer. These survey results underscore the
fact that companies have the best intentions when it comes to
keeping important data and files safe during transfer, yet they may
not have adequate technology in place to do so, leaving data
vulnerable, said Kathryn Hughes, Director of Product Marketing for
the SecureTransport product suite at Tumbleweed. Tumbleweed has
created an easier way for managed file transfer, addressing issues
that enterprises face, whether it be an over reliance on email or
lack of file transfer security, the SecureTransport product suite
reduces security risk while improving centralized file transfer
management and compliance. The survey also uncovered that 66
percent of companies admit to using physical media to transport
files. Important data is sent on tapes, CDs and other media via
couriers and express companies, in spite of the risk of lost or
stolen data and data becoming out-of-date prior to arrival. Lastly,
37 percent of respondents allow individual users to manager their
own file transfers, rather than utilizing a central console for
central management and administration. Fortunately, 69 percent of
respondents centrally manage file transfer via the IT department.
