Business Wire
SRS Labs (NASDAQ:SRSL), the industry leader in surround
sound, audio enhancement, and voice post-processing technologies,
announced today that its SRS 5.1™ Surround Sound audio encoding
technology is now available as part of the FMOD audio middleware
solution for the PC and Mac platforms. The support for SRS 5.1
Surround Sound will be integrated into the widely popular and
respected FMOD Ex API, which is the audio engine that many best
selling games use today.
“PC gaming has been incredibly popular since the first consumer
computer systems hit the market in the late 70s and with decades of
innovation under its belt, the PC has become not only the most
popular gaming platform but, by far, the most powerful,” said
Allen H. Gharapetian, Senior Vice President of Marketing for
SRS Labs. “With half of the gaming experience relying on sound to
fully immerse a player in the action, we are excited to be working
with FMOD to make SRS 5.1, our highly effective, tested and trusted
surround sound audio technology, available to game developers using
FMOD’s popular API.”
SRS 5.1 is designed to provide content creators with the
tools to create and deliver true, high-quality streamed surround
sound encoded content to any type of playback device. Developers
using the FMOD Ex API will automatically get access to SRS’
powerful surround sound audio encoding engine, making it extremely
easy for developers to design their games to feature immersive
surround sound. Because millions of PCs today already feature SRS
audio solutions like Premium Sound™ or Audio Essentials™, every one
of these PCs are natively equipped with the capability to decode
SRS 5.1 surround encoded content.
“With the PC being the world’s most popular gaming platform, we
wanted to make sure that our developers had access to surround
sound encoding technology from one of the PC industry’s most
popular surround sound solution providers,” said Brett Paterson,
CEO of Firelight Technologies Pty Ltd. “We are very excited to be
working with the audio experts at SRS Labs to integrate their
highly efficient 5.1 surround sound encoding solution into our API.
Unlike most surround sound codecs, SRS 5.1 is able to be
transmitted via a standard low-bandwidth stereo audio stream, as
opposed to a resource intensive discrete multi-channel stream,
which can cause detrimental bandwidth restrictions that affect
graphics performance.”
Some of the other major benefits associated with SRS encoding
and decoding solutions include:
- Multichannel and front-rendered
surround sound
- Smooth steering and full bandwidth for
a seamless and immersive surround environment
- Backwards compatibility with legacy
matrix decoders and stereo playback
- Codec agnostic – SRS 5.1 works in
harmony with any audio codec
- Surround streaming over bit rates as
low as 96kbps
