Inventor's Sound Retrieval System technology led to formation of SRS Labs SANTA ANA, Calif., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SRS Labs (NASDAQ:SRSL), the industry leader in surround sound, audio, and voice technologies, announced today with deep regret the passing of Arnold Klayman, one of the leading innovators in the history of audio technology, and inventor of the Sound Retrieval System(R), after which SRS Labs is named. Mr. Klayman was 82. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070322/LATH036LOGO) "This is a very sad day at SRS", said Tom Yuen, CEO of SRS Labs. "Arnold was a genuine innovator whose contributions extend across a wide range of audio products. He was one of the very first to apply the science of psychoacoustics to improve audio playback, and he had a keen understanding of the human hearing process. He will be deeply missed." Arnold was a brilliant researcher and inventor who combined his love of music and technology to develop many novel and unique products in the field of audio electronics. He held more than twenty patents. In the early 70's, Klayman created the renowned Venturi bookshelf speaker, which became the fourth largest selling speaker in the U.S. He received two patents for this design, which produced four times as much bass as comparably sized loudspeakers. In 1980, Klayman started an R&D facility and acted as a consultant for acoustical engineering projects. He was retained by Hughes Aircraft to create advanced entertainment systems for wide body aircraft, and it was at Hughes that he created SRS' namesake technology -- the Sound Retrieval System. This technology restored the original three-dimensional sound field of stereo recordings by retrieving spatial information buried in the recordings. It's become the world's leading 3D Sound technology. In 1984, Hughes hired Klayman as a senior scientist and formed an audio division around him. Over the next seven years, he developed many other audio technologies for the company, and received several additional audio and speaker-related patents. In 1994, Klayman came over to the newly formed SRS Labs, Inc., where he continued to use his skills to enhance the company's portfolio of audio technologies, including WOW, TruBass, TruSurround, FOCUS, 3D Mono and VIP. In 2006, Klayman retired from the company. Arnold is survived by his son Jonathan, of Torrington, CT. He is fondly remembered by all who knew him as a cheerful, generous and kind-hearted man who gave freely of his time and resources. He made better the lives of everyone around him, and he will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed. About SRS Labs, Inc.
