Pro-Stat(R) Shown to Be Effective in Maintaining Healthy Nitrogen Balance and Lean Body Mass in Elderly

A study published in the June issue of the Journal of the American
Dietetic Association (JADA) shows that Pro-Stat was effective in
maintaining nitrogen balance among the elderly and may be superior
in maintaining lean body mass. These findings are of significant
importance to the rapidly growing geriatric population, many of
whose diets are inadequate in protein because of poor appetite,
digestion and other dietary issues. Based on these findings,
Pro-Stat, a concentrated, fortified liquid protein distributed by
Medical Nutrition USA, Inc. (NASDAQ: MDNU), provides a significant
opportunity to prevent negative nitrogen balance, preserve lean
body mass and minimize related morbidity and mortality in this
vulnerable population.
The study, "Effects of Whey and Fortified Collagen Hydrolysate
Protein Supplements on Nitrogen Balance and Body Composition in
Older Women," was directed by William J. Evans, Ph.D., FACSM, FACN
Director, Nutrition, Metabolism, and Exercise Laboratory; Professor
of Geriatrics, Physiology, and Nutrition; Donald Reynolds
Department of Geriatric at the University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences. The study compared the effects of Medical Nutrition's
Pro-Stat against a whey-based protein supplement in a group of
70-year-old women, each of whom consumed the Recommended Dietary
Allowance (RDA) for protein with half coming from the supplement
and the other half from food.
"Consistent with previous studies, Pro-Stat was found to be the
most effective method of addressing one of the wide range of issues
that can result from protein insufficiency," said Frank A. Newman,
Medical Nutrition's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Rigorous
independent studies such as this, combined with Pro-Stat's low
cost, superior ease of consumption and quicker absorption provide
real benefits for the large and growing elderly population."
Elderly Have High Protein Requirements
According to the study, many elderly people have a low intake of
dietary protein, yet their protein requirement may actually be
higher than the current RDA. The study noted that "high-quality
protein supplements may be useful to enhance nitrogen retention and
increase the availability of essential amino acids in elderly
people."
The study concluded that Pro-Stat "maintained nitrogen balance
and preserved lean body mass during 15-days of consumption of a
relatively low protein diet."
