Entropic Announces Availability of Its Open RDK Platform Leveraging OpenEmbedded Technology and the Yocto Project Development...
February 10 2014 - 8:00AM
Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions
for the connected home, today announced the availability of its
Open RDK System-on-a-Chip (SoC) platform leveraging the
OpenEmbedded core technology and the Yocto Project™ development
environment. By using Entropic's platform, operators implementing
RDK (Reference Design Kit), an integrated, open software bundle for
set-top devices, can minimize software diversity in their set-top
boxes, which saves significant time and resources on application
development by increasing the reuse of software. Entropic will
demonstrate its Open RDK platform this week at RDK User's
Conference, which is being held on February 11, in Denver.
Entropic's Open RDK platform is the first RDK-driven SoC
solution leveraging the OpenEmbedded core technology which provides
build recipes for open source components together with the Yocto
Project build environment. Together, OpenEmbedded and the Yocto
Project standardize both the components of the Embedded Linux
distribution and the build environment, which includes the tools,
libraries and configurations required to build open Linux-based
set-top devices. In doing so, Entropic can ensure RDK
implementations are fully-accessible across device types and that
operators/OEMs have access to thousands of open-source components
that target that same build-flow and use the same standardized
tools.
Entropic's Open RDK platform is comprised of its ARM®-based SoCs
and Software Development Kit (SDK). The Company has worked with
industry leaders across both the RDK and ARM ecosystems to enable
the delivery of the version 1.5 branch of OpenEmbedded, Dora, and
the Yocto Project development environment for the Entropic set-top
box SoC family of products. Through use of the OpenEmbedded
technology and Yocto Project build environment, Entropic's Open RDK
SoC maximizes the commonality of the code used on different set-top
devices, making it architecture agnostic.
Entropic also worked with a leading Pay-TV operator and
Linaro, a not-for-profit engineering organization
consolidating and optimizing open source Linux software and tools
for the ARM architecture, and demonstrated its SDK and Open RDK
platform using OpenEmbedded recipes and the Yocto Project build
environment in October 2013.
"Entropic's platform takes advantage of the Yocto Project
environment and significant Linaro optimizations to enable seamless
support of open source components and software development across
different hardware configurations," said Mark Gregotski,
engineering director of the Linaro Digital Home Group (LHG). "We
look forward to opportunities for LHG to continue collaborating
with Entropic and other companies to expand the RDK opportunity to
operators, OEMs and the developer community."
"This is the first time in the history of set-top box middleware
solutions where standard open-source components and processes are
used to minimize the software diversity for application
developers," said Roger Gregory, vice president, Marketing,
Entropic. "Our RDK-focused SoC solution is fully open, leading to
full software stack portability across different hardware
configurations from low-cost set-top boxes, hybrid set-top boxes
and DVRs to IP-Client and gateway products."
Availability
Leveraging one SDK across its SoC product offerings, Entropic's
Open RDK platform is available to its full range of SoC products.
Its RDK kernel distribution and build environment is available in
February 2014.
About RDK
The Reference Design Kit (RDK) is a pre-integrated software
bundle developed and licensed to create a common framework for
powering IP or hybrid Set-Top Boxes and gateway devices for CE
manufacturers, SoC vendors, software developers, system integrators
and TV service providers. The RDK was developed to accelerate the
deployment of next-generation video services and prevent software
fragmentation by providing speed-to-market, collaboration and
standardization. Supported by more than 120 licensees, RDK
Management, LLC was formed as a joint venture between Comcast Cable
and Time Warner Cable to administer the RDK. More information is
