Entropic Communications Discusses Power Management in the Connected Home
August 24 2012 - 8:00AM
Energy efficiency has become a mainstream requirement for all
consumer products and specifically set-top boxes (STBs) and home
networking equipment. US federal and state governments as well as
some European governments have started initiatives to regulate the
maximum allowed annual energy consumption of STBs and home
networking equipment.
Given the expected power consumption of STBs and other networked
devices, as well as the impending STB energy efficiency regulations
the U.S. Department of Energy will be discussing in October 2012,
Entropic is available to talk about a practical approach to
ensuring Connected Home products can meet government standards
while minimizing power consumption through specific product
features.
Who: |
Dr. Anton Monk, co-founder and
vice president, Technology at Entropic Communications, Inc. |
|
(Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in
semiconductor solutions for the connected home |
|
|
|
What: |
In a brief 2-minute video, and
available for a phone briefing, Dr. Monk discusses
energy |
|
consumption in a whole-home
Connected Home Entertainment System. He addresses: |
|
1.
Why is power consumption important in CE devices like STBs and
gateways? |
|
2.
What is the difference between power management and power
consumption? |
|
3.
Why is it important to focus on power management? |
|
4.
How does an Entropic STB System-on-a-Chip (SoC) help ensure a
product can |
|
meet
government standards and minimize power consumption? |
|
5.
What power management features are leveraged by next-gen STB
products to |
|
help
reduce power consumption? |
Why You Should Care: |
Reasons noted below: |
|
|
1. Industry and Consumer:
More people and international governing bodies are increasingly
focused on energy efficiency efforts and the general trend to "go
green" |
|
2. Operator and OEM: Low
power consumption can be a selling point to selecting or defining
products, as there is a cascading effect when reducing
power: |
|
* Cost savings in the power supply, |
|
* Smaller
enclosure resulting in smaller packages; and |
|
|
* Lower
weight which will further reduce shipping costs. |
