Ecology and Environment Engineering and Geology, P.C. (E & E)
is pleased to announce that on April 13, 2019, it was awarded a
Diamond Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of
Engineering Companies (ACEC) New York—the highest honor in ACEC’s
state competitions—for its work on behalf of the United States Army
Corps of Engineers (USACE), New York and Kansas City Districts on
the automated radiological soil sorting pilot study at Middlesex
Municipal Landfill in New Jersey.
“This is a tremendous honor for E & E, and one of which we
are very proud,” said Todd Musterait, President of U.S. Operations.
“We are driven by innovation every day, on every project, and we
are committed to providing solutions that work for our clients and
for all project stakeholders. We couldn’t be more excited to have
our work with the USACE at Middlesex recognized with such a
prestigious award.”
E & E and the USACE designed and conducted a pilot study to
determine if radiologically contaminated material at the 37-acre
Middlesex Landfill in New Jersey (which became contaminated during
the nation’s early atomic energy program) could be isolated from
other materials to reduce the amount of material requiring special
handling and disposal. E & E tested a cutting-edge, highly
efficient soil-sorting technology at the site to segregate
materials that had been previously thought to be extremely
difficult to economically separate, ultimately demonstrating that
only 22 percent of the entire volume of soil processed was
radiologically contaminated.
With such a low percentage of the soils excavated for the study
needing special handling, E & E was able to demonstrate
significant cost savings into the remediation of this waste site,
reduction of greenhouse gasses to transport the material, and
saving valuable space in landfills specially designed to store
materials like these. “The broader applications of this technology
are tremendous,” said Dan Kennedy, E & E’s project manager at
the site. “Without it, significant volumes of non-impacted
materials excavated along with impacted materials would be treated
as radiologically contaminated and therefore require expensive
handling and disposal methods.”
About E & EE & E is a global network of
innovators and problem solvers, dedicated professionals and
industry leaders in scientific, engineering, and planning
disciplines working collaboratively with clients to develop
technically sound, science-based solutions to the leading
environmental challenges of our time. The company is listed on the
