desirous to pare yesterday's losses, as 13 of the 15 markets that
we track are currently positive. The cumulative average return on
the group stands at a positive 0.497 percent. Good news out of
Japan as October Machinery Orders came in above expectations. Core
machinery orders rose by 17.4 percent on the month and were higher
by 23.1 percent on a year- over-year basis. The rise surpassed
estimates for a 4.9 percent monthly increase and broke a string of
three consecutive monthly declines. I am not sure how much of an
offset this figure will ultimately have in the face of Japan's
revised third quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Yesterday
evening Japan's Q3 GDP was revised to plus 0.3 percent from the
last estimate of plus 0.6 percent as business spending slowed in
the quarter. Before the market open today, two reports on the
health of the retailing sector during this most important time of
the year will be released. We may get a feel for the potential loss
in revenue caused by the storms that ravaged the East coast.
Retailers do not need Mother Nature interfering with their "plan"
as both reports showed declines in the prior week. The BTM-UBS
Chain Store Sales declined by 0.1 percent, while the Redbook Retail
Sales index declined by 2.8 percent. At 9:00 a.m., Mr. Greenspan
and company should call to order the Federal Open Market Committee
Meeting. At 2:15 p.m., the Federal Open Market Committee Meeting
Interest rate decision is expected. Fed Funds traders currently
discount for a zero percent change in short term interest rates.
What they can't show you is the market expectation for a statement
on Fed policy. As always, watch that first "tick" following the
release of the statement. That seems to work well as the market
signals its ultimate direction into the close. Be prepared for the
