CDW Government, Inc. (CDW-G), a wholly owned subsidiary of CDW Corporation (NASDAQ:CDWC) and leading source of information technology (IT) solutions to governments and educators, today announced that it implemented a new Cisco network for the Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD) in Palos Verdes, Calif. The new network - with wired and wireless components - enables library staff to offer expanded services to citizens and improves the security of library data, including patron records. PVLD (www.pvld.org) serves about 70,000 residents in four small cities: Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, and Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. Four full-time IT professionals staff the main library in Rolling Hills Estates and two branch libraries in Rancho Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Estates. PVLD closely coordinated with a dedicated CDW-G account manager before, during and after implementation, ensuring quick turnaround and on-site support to ensure a successful, on-time deployment. With the new network, PVLD has enabled wireless broadband Internet access via the library's new wireless hotspot. For many residents of Palos Verdes, located on a peninsula outside Los Angeles, the hilly terrain has made wireless and even wired Internet access sometimes difficult to obtain. Now, residents are able to access the Web faster and more reliably at the library than at any other location in the Palos Verdes area. "Now our patrons can use their wireless-enabled laptops anywhere in the library for free," said Laszlo Latkoczy, information technology manager for the library district. "This new service will help us meet the goal of providing patrons with a better Internet experience here at the library than they get at home." Working with IT services partner Affidia Systems, Inc. of Encino, Calif., CDW-G installed the new network, separating computers allocated for patron Internet access and online reference database access from systems used by library staff at the reference desk, circulation desk and administrative offices. As a result, library users cannot gain access to confidential data such as patron addresses and phone numbers, and any virus inadvertently downloaded to a patron PC while accessing Internet resources - whether at home or in the library - cannot infect the larger library network or other patron PCs. Further, CDW-G and Affidia Systems implemented the network so that private information cannot be accessed in the public spaces of the library, further bolstering data security. For example, staff can access patron borrowing records at the circulation desk, but patron phone numbers can be accessed only by administrative staff working in areas of the library that are not open to the public. "Citizens take their libraries very seriously and expect that services offered will continually expand to meet their needs. They also expect that their personal information will be protected," said Alan Weiss, CDW-G director of public sector sales, state and local government. "Palos Verdes has delivered with its new network, ensuring patron satisfaction on both fronts."
