JDS Uniphase Enables the Most Reconfigurable Networks: Over 1,000 Wavelength Management Modules Shipped SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU; TSX: JDU.NV) today announced that it has shipped over 1,000 wavelength management modules. These products are used by optical communication system manufacturers in next generation designs that can be reconfigured remotely, even automatically, to allow service operators to quickly and cost-effectively adapt to changes in network demands. "Carriers are seeking to include reconfigurable wavelength management to increase the flexibility of their optical networks, and we believe that this capability will be widely deployed in the network over the next 3-5 years," said Roy Rubenstein, Senior Analyst for telecom market research and advisory firm RHK, Inc. "JDS Uniphase is well placed to benefit from the market for reconfigurable wavelength modules with its mix of optical component platforms and technologies. We estimate that the market for systems containing these types of modules is already over $100 million and is one of the fastest growing segments within optical networking." For service providers feeling competitive pressure to become more cost-effective, these systems offer increased network flexibility while reducing capital and operating costs. JDS Uniphase wavelength management modules have been selected by leading system manufacturers and are currently deployed by several of the world's largest telecommunications service providers. "Because of the long-term reliability needs of equipment installed in the network, Siemens AG is uncompromising about building quality into every aspect of our systems, and that includes our selection of suppliers," said Patrick Leisching, Head of Department for Optical Systems, Siemens AG. "Because of JDS Uniphase's technical expertise and field-proven experience they were a natural choice as a supplier for Siemens' reconfigurable, next- generation system." JDS Uniphase wavelength management modules include wavelength blockers, multi-port wavelength switches and reconfigurable optical add/drop modules (ROADMs). These products can be cascaded over many nodes, manipulating and routing signals in the optical domain, and eliminating the need for expensive optical-electrical-optical (O-E-O) regeneration in the express path. The ability to remotely plan, re-configure and optimize the network to dynamically changing traffic patterns minimizes the need for field site visits and shortens the planning and implementation phases. Part commonality also reduces inventory levels and sparing costs and streamlines inventory management and ordering systems. JDS Uniphase has the broadest portfolio of wavelength management modules in the industry. Its wavelength blockers are being deployed, primarily in long haul, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) applications. The full-function ROADM, based on planar waveguide technology, is designed to meet the requirements of the metro ROADM market. And the multi-port wavelength switch is being evaluated for both long haul and metro DWDM systems.
