American Electric Power Co. (AEP) said Tuesday it's doubling a renewable-energy goal, planning to add 2,000 megawatts instead of 1,000 megawatts of generation by 2011.

The company said the goal is dependent on regulatory support, since American Electric operates as a traditional utility, not a competitive power producer. The Columbus, Ohio, utility has added 900 megawatts of wind capacity since 2007 and plans under its new goal to have a total of 2,600 megawatts of renewable generation by 2011.

American Electric provides power to more than five million customers in 11 states and is one of the nation's biggest electricity generators, including a large fleet of coal-fired power plants.
