SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- JDSU (Nasdaq: JDSU; TSX: JDU) today announced new features for its ANT-5 advanced network tester that enable service providers to cost-effectively install, troubleshoot and maintain wireline systems used in 3G mobile networks. The features, available installed or as software upgrades for existing ANT-5 users, provide stress tests and early-stage troubleshooting on newly installed 3G network elements and are designed to eliminate truck rolls and ensure service agreements. The new features will be on display next week at 3GSM World Congress 2006 in Barcelona, Hall 2, booth G115. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050913/SFTU125LOGO ) According to widespread market studies, the present 3G market constitutes 40 million users worldwide, indicating that it is still in an early growth stage (when compared to approximately two billion mobile users worldwide). 2006 represents a year when service providers are expected to more aggressively expand their networks and increase capacity in order to provide mainstream 3G services -- including video and music downloads -- but the limited range of each 3G base station (roughly one-third that of GSM, or "2G") means a considerably greater number of base stations are required to ensure full coverage. This requirement will drive installation and maintenance needs of the overall system -- and the new ANT-5 features are designed to address these needs. "As wireless carriers realize the demand to provide greater capacity, faster data speeds and enhanced versions of the services already available on most handsets, they are also confronted with the challenge of further network troubleshooting requirements. Building new 3G base stations that operate effectively with the wireline side of the network is critical to the operator's success and ensuring subscriber satisfaction," said Jerry Gentile, general manager of JDSU's telecommunication field services (TFS) Test and Measurement group. "The JDSU ANT-5 is a tool that allows field personnel to perform on-site checks at cell site nodes and eliminates the need to carry multiple bulky, heavy test sets into the field." The new features for the ANT-5 provide ATM traffic generation and analysis, IP-Ping, Trace-Route, and IMA monitoring -- all essential technologies that support the expansion of 3G networks. Specifically, the ANT-5's enhanced ATM features are designed to allow the operator's system to be stressed during installation, ensuring that it is able to support required demand as well as allow the evaluation of voice priority over data traffic; its IP feature set is designed to aid base station installation and reduce truck rolls by allowing the field technician to examine end-to-end connectivity; and IMA monitoring features allow installation and in-service system evaluation, ensuring ensure maximum efficiency of the wireline infrastructure used to support the expanding network.
