Salamander Technologies’ MOBILE PIV™ software has been integrated with the Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) MC75A handheld mobile computer and Biometric Smart Card reader attachment to add a FIPS 201-compliant Cardholder Unique Identifier (CHUID) reader to the General Services Administration (GSA) Approved Product List (APL). This unique solution goes beyond HSPD-12 requirements by including HSPD-5 required tracking functionality.

Salamander Technologies’ MOBILE PIV identification software, part of Salamander’s interTRAX® Suite of Accountability Solutions, enables Motorola’s MC75A handheld mobile computer and Biometric Smart Card reader attachment to provide credentialing, secure access and identity verification to First Responders. This integrated Motorola/Salamander FIPS 201-compliant product fulfills Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), which requires federal workers to carry a secure Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card, by capturing and then certifying fingerprint samples when authenticating a cardholder’s identity. It controls site security and access by employing three-factor authentication:

1. What you have (PIV Smart Card)

2. What you know (PIN number)

3. Who you are (Biometric fingerprint)

In addition, Salamander’s MOBILE PIV solution fulfills HSPD-5, which requires agencies to follow National Incident Management System (NIMS) guidelines. These guidelines require situational awareness at an incident. Specifically, incident commanders must be able to answer:

  • Who is on site/where are they assigned?
  • What are their qualifications?
  • When did they arrive/depart/undergo a status check?

“This is a total solution story,” said Rob Jones, Salamander chief technology officer. “We embarked on this journey with Motorola Solutions to provide interoperability with federal ID cards, while allowing users to participate in Salamander’s widely adopted incident command model. This product allows ID cards to be used in real-world situations, enabling incident commanders to track first responders with total confidence that Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 201 guidelines are being followed – whether they arrive from local, state, or federal government agencies.”

Listed on the GSA FIPS 201 APL under the CHUID Reader category as MOBILE PIV™, this integrated solution has been independently validated by InfoGard, the first IT security laboratory accredited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

"This combined solution helps deliver outstanding situational awareness and management capabilities to an incident commander, with results that meet stringent Federal authentication requirements," said John Thompson, vice president, Motorola Solutions. "Motorola Solutions is excited about working with an innovative company like Salamander Technologies to provide a mobile solution to our customers."
