The European Commission has extended its antitrust review of Intel Corp.'s (INTC) proposed $7.68 billion deal to buy security-software specialist McAfee Inc. (MFE) to Jan. 26, a posting on the commission's website showed Thursday.

The previous deadline was Jan. 12.

The extension will give the commission time to analyse remedies Intel has submitted to solve potential antitrust concerns posed by the deal, the posting showed.

The commission, the European Union's executive arm and antitrust authority, has concerns about the takeover, people familiar with the issue told The Wall Street Journal in December.

Intel's plan to incorporate security features into its widely used microprocessor chips is under scrutiny, according to these people. The EU appears concerned that if McAfee, by virtue of being owned by Intel, has privileged access to those features, it would give the software company a clear advantage over its business rivals, they added.
