Innovative storage technology provider reaches new milestone
MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Corporation
(NYSE:LSI) today announced that its read channel technology has
shipped in more than 1 billion hard disk drives (HDDs), reinforcing
its technology leadership position in System-on-a-Chip (SoC)
components for HDDs. The LSI read channel technology originated
with AT&T, as part of pioneering work in communications at Bell
Labs. Since 1992 when volume shipments of read channels began, LSI
has developed successive advances in read channel technology, most
recently launching the industry's first 65nm iterative decoding
read channel solutions.* "This milestone represents approximately
30 percent of all HDDs shipped since the read channel technology
was adopted," said Ruediger Stroh, executive vice president and
general manager, LSI Storage Peripherals Group. "It is a tribute
not only to our strengths in HDD SoCs, but to our strategic
relationships with the top hard drive manufacturers over many
years. The complexity of HDD SoC technology and innovation in read
channels, in particular, reinforces that LSI is a leader in
advanced storage technologies." Shane Rau, program director for
IDC's Computing and Storage Semiconductor research, said, "Read
channel technology continues to be the linchpin of custom hard disk
drive SoCs, and nearly 3.7 billion SoCs are expected to be shipped
from 2007 through 2012. IDC data show that the companies that came
into this decade with competitive discrete read channel technology
survived consolidation and became the market-leading SoC companies.
IDC believes that read channel technology will continue to be a
major determinant of HDD chip vendor market performance because HDD
customers will be looking for it to serve the performance and power
consumption needs of market-driving applications such as video
storage and low-power storage for mobile PCs." Better read channel
performance means increased capacity and improved manufacturing
yields, critical factors to profitability in the highly competitive
HDD market. By offering complete SoC solutions with integrated read
channels, hard disk controllers, serial interfaces, processors, and
memory, LSI enables its customers to address all segments of the
hard disk drive market, from mission-critical enterprise
applications, high-capacity desktop PCs and low-power laptops, and
a variety of consumer electronics devices. With its broad storage
portfolio -- from hard disk drive components to storage boards to
complete storage systems -- LSI provides the most complete
end-to-end storage solutions. *Visit
