Network Capacity RESEARCH TRIANGLE, N.C. and BELLEVUE, Wash., Aug.
3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a
leading global provider of wireless equipment and services, today
announced that its highest-capacity Constellation(R) radios have
been selected to expand the cellular network capacity of Western
Wireless Corporation (NASDAQ:WWCA). Western Wireless is a leading
provider of rural wireless communications services to more than 1.2
million customers under the Cellular One(R) and Western Wireless(R)
brands and a roaming carrier for most major cellular operators. The
Harris Constellation is the industry's only radio to offer the very
reliable, high- capacity 4xDS3 interface. "Our subscriber base and
network traffic are growing rapidly and we provide roaming service
for several national carriers, so the ability to achieve our
buildout milestones on time was a key factor in selecting Harris,"
said Jerry Baker, senior vice president of engineering and
technical operations at Western Wireless Corporation. "By bringing
various systems online quickly and within budget, Harris makes it
easy for us to meet our commitments to other carriers." Western
Wireless Corporation is one of Harris Microwave Communications
Division's (MCD) largest customers, utilizing Constellation and
MegaStar(R) 1:N radios to backhaul traffic from cell sites to their
Mobile Telephone Switching offices (MTSO). Harris installs
approximately 40 to 50 systems a year for Western Wireless, ranging
from a single hop to 5 or 6 hops. "Our Constellation radios allow
Western Wireless to reduce capital expenditures by increasing the
capacity of their network without purchasing additional, parallel
radios as capacity demands increase," said Jayne Leighton, vice
president of North American Sales and Services for Harris MCD. "We
are very pleased that they have again selected Harris to meet their
network growth needs and better serve their customers."
Constellation's powerful features include an integrated add/drop
multiplexer, which provides DS1 access from a selected DS3 with no
need for an external M13 multiplexer. Constellation's single
platform supports 8/16/28DS1, 1xDS3, OC-3, 3xDS-3, or 2xDS3 +
28xDS1 capabilities with an upgrade path from low/medium to high
capacity. In addition to the industry's most flexible capacity
options, Constellation also provides quick protection switching
compatible with SONET, errorless receive switching, and reverse
channel switching to protect from silent upstream failures. Remote
software downloads and remote module inventory can be performed
with the convenient craft-person interface via the user's laptop or
optional keypad. Constellation operates in the 6, 7/8, and 10/11
GHz frequency bands and is one of the industry's most powerful and
flexible digital microwave radio systems. About Western Wireless
