FAA Deputy Administrator Robert Sturgell Visits Harris Corporation

Executive Team Tours Melbourne-based FTI Nationwide Network
Operations Center MELBOURNE, Fla., July 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Deputy Administrator Robert
A. Sturgell and other agency executives today visited Harris
Corporation's (NYSE:HRS) headquarters in Melbourne for an FTI
program update and a tour of the FTI Primary Network Operations and
Control Center (PNOCC), also located in Melbourne. The PNOCC is the
main operations center from which the FAA's nationwide
communications network is monitored and managed. The Center is part
of the $1.9 billion FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI)
program awarded to Harris in July 2002. "FTI is designed to cut
$700 million in telecommunications operating costs over the life of
the program, and therefore represents a significant savings for the
FAA," said Steve Dash, manager, FAA Air Traffic Control
Telecommunications Services Office. "I am impressed with the
network operations center here in Melbourne, and pleased with the
obvious progress of the FTI program." "We are delighted that Mr.
Sturgell and the FAA executive team accepted our invitation to tour
this world-class network operations center, built with Harris
technology and operated by the FTI team," said Howard L. Lance,
Harris chairman and CEO. "The PNOCC is essential to managing and
monitoring FAA operations nationwide. It ensures that maximum
efficiencies, availability, and security are realized throughout
the entire FAA telecommunications network, which is crucial in
supporting the civil aviation mission and critical to U.S. national
security and economic vitality." The PNOCC exclusively serves the
FAA as a centralized and integrated network operations center for
all operational communications needs throughout the agency's 5,000
facilities nationwide. This dedicated, around-the-clock control
center allows the staff to handle virtually all communications
requirements, including reporting of problems and network status
for all FAA users, so that the agency can focus on its top priority
-- managing the nation's air traffic. A remote backup NOCC provides
further redundancy. The state-of-the-art PNOCC is supported by a
redundant, robust architecture housed within a 6,500-square foot
facility. Physical building security, redundant climate control
systems, and uninterruptible power sources ensure system and
facility availability with zero downtime while security features
such as firewalls, intrusion detection sensors, and encryption
devices safeguard the system's integrity. Last October, the Air
Traffic Control Association (ATCA) awarded Harris its prestigious
2003 Industrial Award. The award is given annually to a government
contractor for significantly enhancing the safety, quality, and
efficiency of the nation's air traffic control system. The award
recognized Harris' long history of developing and integrating
systems solutions for the FAA and the global air traffic control
network. The company's work on FTI was a major factor in receiving
the award. Other FAA programs developed by Harris are the Weather
And Radar Processor (WARP); the Operational And Supportability
Implementation System (OASIS); the Voice Switching and Control
System (VSCS); and the Alaskan NAS Interfacility Communications
System (ANICS). Harris Corporation is an international
communications technology company focused on providing assured
communications(TM) products, systems and services for government
and commercial customers. The company's four operating divisions
serve markets for government communications, tactical radio,
broadcast, microwave, and network support systems. Harris provides
systems and service to customers in more than 150 countries.
