Harris Wins $7 Million in Contracts for Broadband Wireless Access
(BWA) Network From Sirius Wireless Ltd. of Nigeria Harris to Design
and Supply Advanced BWA Systems REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., June 2
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading
global supplier of wireless equipment and services, has been
selected to provide the network infrastructure for Sirius Wireless
Limited, a wireless services provider in Nigeria. The first phase
of the multi-phase contracts has a value of approximately USD $7
million, if equipment and related service options are exercised.
Phase one includes Harris ClearBurst(TM) MB base stations,
microwave interconnect and associated services. When complete, the
network will bring high-quality telephony and Internet access to
more than 24,000 residential and business customers in Rivers
State, Nigeria. "After a considerable evaluation of major
international bidders by our U.S. parent company, ThirdWave
Networks Holdings, we are pleased to engage Harris as the
contractor for our Rivers State, Nigeria broadband network," said
Danjuma Saleh, director of Sirius Wireless. "Harris' experience and
commitment to the Africa market was a significant consideration in
this selection. The Harris system will help Sirius Wireless to
deliver top-quality, world-class telecommunications services." The
ClearBurst MB broadband wireless access system has been installed
successfully across four continents since its release in 2001.
ClearBurst operates at the 3.5 frequency band, features a small
size footprint and is easy to install and maintain. Sirius Wireless
will utilize the ClearBurst Remote Stackable module to multiply the
number of ports available at a single customer location. The
stackable module connects a single Outdoor Unit (ODU) to up to
eight Indoor Units (IDUs). This innovative signal distribution
method allows the operator to save on the capital investment,
rooftop leases and installation of the ODU. They will also use
Harris TRuepoint(TM) radios for backhaul and Harris NetBoss(TM)
network management systems. "The flexible, cost-effective and
bandwidth-efficient operation of the Harris system solution is
ideal for growing service providers like Sirius who must be able to
adapt and expand as needs change," said Guy Campbell, president of
Harris Microwave Communications Division. "We are very pleased to
be working with Sirius to build a network that will bring
affordable communication services to an area where broadband access
has been very limited and very costly." "ThirdWave Networks
Holdings Incorporated is executing a Competitive Local Exchange
Carrier (CLEC) business model in strategic African countries,"
explained Charles Oshunremi, chairman and CEO of ThirdWave Networks
Holdings, the parent company of Sirius Wireless. "Using wireless
broadband technologies as a service delivery medium is a viable
option in our markets and has strong upside in many developing
economies where the landline infrastructure is inadequate." About
