Harris Corporation's NetBoss(TM) Selected for Major Expansion of Claro's Mobile Telecommunications Network MELBOURNE, Fla., May 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Claro, one of the two largest mobile telecommunications providers in Brazil, has again selected Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) to support a major expansion of its extensive GSM, TDMA and GPRS network. This expansion project will result in one of the largest applications to date of the Harris NetBoss(TM) network management system, managing more than 10,000 network devices with a capability of handling up to five million events per day. Claro (formerly Telecom Americas) last year implemented the Harris NetBoss system to centrally manage five separate mobile networks throughout Brazil. Following the acquisition of a sixth mobile network -- BCP, which covers metropolitan Sao Paulo -- Claro awarded Harris an expansion project contract that includes extending the existing network management architecture, new hardware, and additional fault management functionality for the new BCP network. In addition to the primary network expansion components such as Sun Servers, Claro purchased additional interfaces to support new network elements and alarm correlation; the NetBoss Reporter tool, a customizable reporting application; and the Harris Root Cause Analysis (RCA) module. "We are extremely pleased that as part of Claro's continuing focus on quality of service, they have once again selected Harris for a major expansion project," said Rich Pappalardo, director of International Sales, Harris Network Support Division. "In order to accommodate their new acquisition and other expansion efforts, we are implementing a solution developed specifically for multi-operator companies -- a solution that incorporates benefits of both distributed and centralized architectures. This enables Claro to have one Network Operations Center with a complete view of all six networks while simultaneously allowing regional sites to access their own as well as the entire Claro network." Harris NetBoss is an integrated network management application that provides users the ability to administer and manage multivendor, multiprotocol communications networks from a single console. This enables service providers to quickly detect, isolate and rectify service issues affecting network conditions. Claro is a subsidiary of America Movil and is one of the two largest mobile operators in Latin America, with more than 10 million customers in Brazil. Claro owns six active mobile operators: ATL (Rio de Janeiro/Espirito Santo), Americel (Minas Gerais), Claro Digital (Rio Grande do Sul), Tess (interior of Sao Paulo), BCP (metropolitan Sao Paulo) and BSE (the northeast). In addition, the Claro consortium owns two PCS licenses, covering Parana, Santa Catarina, Bahia and Sergipe. With more than 43 million customers in nine countries, Claro's parent company, America Movil, headquartered in Mexico, is a leading provider of mobile services in Latin America. Harris NSD, one of five divisions within Harris Corporation, delivers advanced management, test, and maintenance solutions for multivendor, multiprotocol networks of public and private communications service providers. Harris' assured communications(TM) solutions address the increasingly complex needs of operations, maintenance, and installation professionals in telecommunications, broadcast, and defense markets worldwide.
